Car Design

To be able to create the fastest car ever, we ought to research on this topic. With help from our Physics teacher and also the internet, we found about various shapes which make a body faster by overcoming various resisting forces or friction. One of them was the teardrop; a shape which looks like a drop of water, curved from one side and pointed from the other. It has the lowest drag coefficient (0.04). In other words, it is the most aerodynamic. There are some features of the teardrop that make it efficient. These can be adopted in a Formula 1 car to get the least drag coefficient and make it faster:

  • the curved nose produces limited pressure points where the object first hits the air
  • the smooth curves on the side of the object create minimal turbulence; and
  • reducing diameter of the object to its pointy tail trains the streamline back behind the object so they do not separate away from its side.

How The Car Becomes A Reality.

Fusion 360 proved to be the best software to design a car. After learning the basics, everyone created at least 2 designs which were later on judged by Mr. Kartik from Time of Sports. He checked all specifications and notified us if some component was against the regulations. This design was used by Sharan to show off his skills. With the use of his knowledge about Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) and Computer Aided Design (CAD), he worked on the base model. Tracing his previous steps, Sharan edited an incomplete model of the car. In the Create mode, he modified the plane of the car. It was made shorter and sleeker for better aerodynamic properties. The edges were filleted and made smooth upto 0.3 cm. He sub-divided each of the faces and easily transformed the half done model into a finished car. The sculpting environment was used and space was created for wheels by extrusion….
